Water Filter Certifications Explained
How to read NSF/ANSI claims and avoid assuming every filter removes every contaminant.
The practical answer
Certification standards apply to specific performance claims, materials and product configurations. A brand name alone is not proof that every product from that brand has the same certification.
How to decide
Look for the exact model and exact contaminant reduction claim in the certifier database or manufacturer documentation. If a listing says “tested to” a standard, distinguish that from independent third-party certification to that standard.
What to verify before buying
Use certification as one part of the decision. Capacity, flow rate, replacement frequency, source-water conditions and correct installation also determine real-world usefulness.
Buy against a measured or documented water-quality problem. Do not assume “more stages” automatically means better treatment.
