PFAS Water Filters: How to Compare Carbon and Reverse Osmosis
PFAS treatment claims should be verified at the exact-product level. Activated carbon and reverse osmosis are common household approaches, but media, contact time, capacity and certification matter.
Start with evidence, not marketing
PFAS is a broad family of chemicals, so broad phrases such as “removes forever chemicals” are not enough on their own. Look for the exact PFAS compounds named in a third-party certification or performance sheet and check the rated capacity and test conditions.
Carbon versus reverse osmosis
Activated-carbon systems can reduce selected PFAS compounds when designed with suitable media and sufficient contact time. Reverse-osmosis membranes can also reduce selected PFAS and many dissolved contaminants. The better choice depends on your water problem, desired flow, installation constraints, wastewater tolerance and maintenance budget.
How to compare products
Prioritize verified contaminant claims, capacity before filter replacement, flow rate, replacement-media cost and the cost of ownership over several years. For reverse osmosis, also compare recovery or waste ratio, feed-water pressure requirements and whether electricity is required.

Do not infer a contaminant-reduction claim from the treatment category alone. Verify the exact model, standard and individual claim in an independent certification database or current validated performance documentation.
