Bacteria, Viruses and Parasites in Water: Filtration, UV and Emergency Treatment

Microbiological water treatment is different from ordinary taste-and-odor filtration. UV, validated microbiological purifiers, boiling and disinfection each have specific operating conditions and limitations.

Household treatment versus emergency treatment

A permanent household UV system is intended for a different use case from emergency boiling or portable treatment. UV performance depends on clear water, adequate dose, lamp condition and proper pretreatment. A standard carbon filter should not be assumed to make microbiologically unsafe water safe.

Certification and validation

NSF/ANSI 244 covers systems intended for intermittent microbiological contamination of otherwise microbiologically safe public water, while NSF P231 addresses microbiological water purifiers. The claim and intended use of the exact system matter.

Emergency guidance

CDC states that boiling is the best way to kill germs in water during an emergency. Clear water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet. CDC also warns that boiling, disinfecting or ordinary filtering cannot make water contaminated with fuels, toxic chemicals or radioactive material safe.

Verification rule

Do not infer a contaminant-reduction claim from the treatment category alone. Verify the exact model, standard and individual claim in an independent certification database or current validated performance documentation.
