Lead in Drinking Water: Testing, Treatment and Filter Selection

Lead is primarily a plumbing and corrosion problem, so the right response starts with testing and an independently certified reduction claim rather than a generic “water filter” label.

Why lead needs a contaminant-specific approach

Lead can enter drinking water when plumbing materials containing lead corrode. The presence and concentration can vary between buildings and even between taps. For a household treatment device, look for an exact model with an independently verified lead-reduction claim rather than assuming every carbon or reverse-osmosis product reduces lead.

Treatment options

Activated-carbon and reverse-osmosis systems can be designed and certified for lead reduction, but performance is model-specific. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-effect reduction claims for filtration products, while NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse-osmosis systems. Certification to a standard does not mean every contaminant in that standard is reduced, so verify the individual lead claim for the exact model.

What to do before buying

Review your water utility's Consumer Confidence Report if you use a community water system, then consider tap-specific testing when plumbing is a concern. Compare certified capacity, replacement schedule, flow rate, installation requirements and annual cartridge cost. A device that is not maintained according to its instructions should not be assumed to deliver its original reduction performance.
